Today CD certainly not the most important achievements of Lee Morgan. But I certainly belongs to the fans of this talented trumpeter, so sometimes I reach for the less well-known and probably a bit weaker, which does not mean that a weak position. These most important, namely The Sidewinder and described the Taru earlier here:
Quite recently refreshed himself a bit longer for my musical memory of a forgotten album Tom Cat:
Lee Morgan is undoubtedly the next most important form of Freddie Hubbard jazz trumpet sixties. Today's disc is proof that even struggling with adversity is not the best organized sessions failed to record a quite interesting material. My copy of the CD, edition of the Rudy Van Gelder Edition enriched by four important from the point of view of the whole songs. Originally, the program board made up of four songs composed played with Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone and the section, which consisted of McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw and Billy Higgins. For this album contained songs recorded two more line-up - eight wind instruments, and arranged by Oliver Nelson. Repertoire CD is traditionally the Blue Note releases from this period a mixture of material written specifically for this session by the leader (quite a neat four compositions), and two so-called hits, which were certainly help sell the album. These commercial vehicles in this case, Yesterday John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and Sunrise, Sunset - theme from the musical Fiddler on the Roof (Fiddler On The Roof). It is these two songs are played in a larger composition.
In such form, it seemed that these two tracks of care has been discarded for some magazine, in order to make an album to the required length and increase its sales. But it was the edition of Rudy Van Gelder Edition reveals that the original compositions played on a CD in a quintet that have been arranged and played by an orchestra led by Oliver Nelson. In this edition we get an additional almost half an hour of valuable and very different music. Wonderful, indeed, the idea of \u200b\u200bAlfred Lion was producing this record, and creating such a wonderful blend.
Music is also pretty amazing. Even opening the leader board composition Ca-Lee-So this introduction by which many pianists would suspect, but certainly not the McCoy Tyner. Very airy and light played about as suggestive of the title, referring to a calypso rhythm. In her next turn, Joe Henderson left the game at times completely out of the melody, using only the chord diagram of the composition and revealing from the saxophone of his dirty sounds more reminiscent of early John Coltrane, than a smooth, technically impeccable and phrases from which we all know it.
always remain a leader, playing exquisite solos, incredibly competent and thoughtful, Traditionally, rather than commenting on the theme of racing by the number of sounds from other masters of the trumpet. Even with Yesterday and Sunrise, Sunset can do jazz gems, whatever that is behind the whole crowd of wind instruments, among which is, inter alia, second trumpet (Ernie Royal), alto saxophone (Phil Woods) and tenor saxophone (Wayne Shorter) . In a variant of the orchestral replaced Billy Higgins, Philly Joe Jones, who apparently did not find a place in this climate, being in a bizarre own way without consulting with the other musicians, while the rhythm section introducing a bit of a mess through the abuse of cymbals.
So we get a total of exquisite solos Lee Morgan, which is a core value of this board and correct, but no remarkable change. That's why The Sidewinder and Taru is outstanding works, and this album is just good. A pretty cool ... Yesterday
